Another Year of Books

Welcome to my blog. Where reading a lot of books is the goal.

Emily Powell

3 minutes read

It’s official. Twenty six books down, twenty six books to go. But only twenty three weeks left in the year (if I counted correctly). I better get moving on the next twenty six. The next option may be to read when my boyfriend drives me too work, but he drives pretty quickly. I should probably stick to reading when I get home.

Book Read: The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters
Author: Balli Kaur Jaswal
Number of Books Read, 2019 Edition: 26

The three Shergill sisters never saw eye to eye as children, let alone in adulthood. Gathered around their mother’s deathbed, she tasks them with one wish - a pilgrimage to the Golden Temple in India, scattering her ashes on their last stop.

Eldest sister Rajni is the organizer. While she has the trip itinerary memorized, her son and his much older girlfriend throw her for a loop before Rajni leaves. Middle sister Jazmeen is trying to lay low. The struggling actress may have kicked a very expensive fish and gone viral. Youngest sister Shirina met a traditional man on an arranged marriage website. Her husband and mother-in -law are pushing her into a decision she doesn’t want to make.

As the Shergill sisters fulfill their mother’s last wish, they will fight, they’ll make up, and they’ll find each other in the exact moment they need to. There will be protests, marriages, well timed meetings, and Tom Hanks. All combine for an unlikely adventure.

I find joy when my random selection at the library pays off. It did with this one. The cover intrigued me, because frankly, it just looked fun.

Each character has her flaws, her own back story and her own things to work through. You’ll find yourself rooting for each one at different times. Jaswal writes about three sisters who have never gotten along, but manage to find their way back to each other just in the nick of time. Jaswal provides a plot full relatable characters, who at times, deal with some pretty heavy topics. Yes, times the book may drag. But what book doesn’t?

Personally, Jazmeen’s story might be my favorite. Kicking a fish that’s worth a quarter of a million? Sounds entertaining.

Overall, The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters is a worthy read, full of laughs, heart and sisterhood.

P.S. I’m still adding to my “to read” list. The most recent additions came from the Target book section, a friend and my grandma. Readers, if you have any suggestions, please let me know!
