Sometimes, I don’t have a reason for picking up at pickup at the library. If it’s not a book on my ever-growing iPhone list titled “Books,” it may be someone, somewhere told me to read it. Or in this case, the cover reminds be of a Fredrik Backman novel. That alone is enough to make me read a book.

Rob Coates feels pretty lucky - he has his wife, his beautiful son Jack, and a pretty fortunate sale of some map code. It seems like life is working out for him. But life can sometimes throw you a curve ball and it’s all about if you can avoid being hit by a pitch.
Rob’s curve ball is more like a screwball, literally. An illness with a terrible outcome takes over his family, and takes Rob’s stability and family life with it. Anna and Rob struggle to be together after a betrayal that at the time is unforgivable. Anna finds work, Rob finds the bottle.
He soon begins a journey, using photography as his way of remembering, and slowly beginning to find his way back to forgiveness. By opening up on an online forum and his photography site, Rob realizes that while life will never be the same, there’s a way to keep moving forward.
In his first novel, Allnutt has clearly done his research into the medical aspect. He writes in a way that makes you feel like you’re watching it happen on screen. Honestly, Hallmark should pick this book up - it would fit into their repertoire without question (trust me I’ve seen a lot of these movies and know what qualifies to be a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie).
Overall, this was a heartwarming, easy to read, book that will make you think about how far some will go for the ones they love. It’s a powerful thing.
