I’m sure most of you have heard of it. It swept awards shows, Nicole Kidman gave a few speeches, so did Laura Dern. And drumroll please… Meryl will be on season 2 (MERYL!), which takes us to book number 22…

Book Read: Big Little Lies
Author: Liane Moriarty
Number of Books Read: 22

A coworker recommended I read Moriarty’s The Husband’s Secret, so I went hunting for it at the library. It was checked out so I picked up Big Little Lies and once I started, I couldn’t put it down.

Yes, parents can be crazy, and parents have their secrets. These parents? They take it to a whole different level.

Madeline is a head-strong, force to be reckoned with. She doesn’t forgive anyone ever, including her ex-husband and his younger, yoga-enthusiast, calm cool and collective wife. Especially when their 14 year old daughter decides to live with her father. Madeline doesn’t deal with being second best very well.

Her friend Celeste has a seemingly perfect life. A perfect husband and perfect twin boys. She and her husband, Perry, could the king and queen of the school. But Celeste is a great actress and has more than a few secrets to hide. Little does she know, so do a few other people she knows.

They take single mom Jane under their wings. Jane and her son Ziggy are new to town, and Jane doesn’t talk about her past often. As she starts to open up, her doubts about her son are revealed. As time passes, she realizes not all things are genetic.

There’s an issue with bullying, both with children and parents, affairs with a French nanny, scandals in the school yard, really popular coffee and decisions to be made. All comes to head at the school’s trivia night. Someone is dead (this is on the sleeve of the book so I am not giving anything away). The question is – was it a tragic accident or murder? Who’s telling the truth and who isn’t? Who’s willing to tell a little lie to protect someone else? Or are these parents “just behaving badly?”

I’m hesitant to give much away, because you should really all read this book. Moriarty writes this book all leading up to Trivia Night, but allows sneak peaks when she includes interviews with people who attended. Throughout the whole story, you keep guessing on who actually is dead, who did it, and why. As the story progresses, the guesses keep coming (although you may figure it out, who knows!).

Go to the library, go to Barnes and Noble, go on Amazon; read Big Little Lies. Out of the 22 books I’ve read this year, I have had a few favorites. This one is definitely on the top of the list.

BRB, going to start the HBO series now that I’ve finished Netflix’s Queer Eye (great show by the way. I recommend watching it during breaks while reading Big Little Lies).

Next Read: You Think It, I’ll Say It by Curtis Sittenfield
