Another Year of Books

Welcome to my blog. Where reading a lot of books is the goal.

Emily Powell

2 minutes read

You know her from Into the Woods, Pitch Perfect and Trolls. Maybe you even remember she was in Twilight (I do). Apparently she also wrote a book!

Book Read: Scrappy Little Nobody
Author: Anna Kendrick
Number of Books Read: 20

My sister Meghan was kind enough to lug Scrappy Little Nobody all the way from Brooklyn so I figured I’d give it a go. Nice of me, huh?

Anna Kendrick has stories to tell. From taking the train from Maine to New York with her brother for auditions, to dating experiences and smoking weed, and having a cyst in her nose popped right before hitting the red carpet, she tells stories about being small, being a nobody and the journey to the top.

She spends time reflecting on her grandmother’s life and how work kept Kendrick away for all but the funeral. She recalls attending a weekend drink fest on a pirate island, and her dating woes from living in LA. She is real and relatable during parts of the book. Particularly when she describes the parties she would throw if she had all the money in the world – I would definitely attend them all without question.

Then, she transitions a section talking about fashion, how she wears thousands of dollars of diamonds and a stylist dresses her for things. This? Not so relatable. Just like how I can’t relate to being nominated for a Tony Award at age 12 (or ever).

Throughout the book, Kendrick will entertain you because she is pretty witty. At times it does move slowly. Until I read a couple of sections, I fell asleep each time I read this on the bus. I’m starting to think memoirs aren’t really for me since this happens most of the time. But then again, it may not be me. I expected a little more, and was slightly disappointed I didn’t walk away loving this one.

If you are looking for a light hearted book to pass the time, pick this one. But there are better memoirs out there (see Anna Faris is Qualified or Lauren Graham’s Talking as Fast as I Can) to read before you pick up this one.
