My sister is getting married. My best friend’s sister is also getting married. Yesterday when we met for lunch, we were comparing the size of the guest lists. But this book trumped us - the wedding of the century with 888 guests. Eight hundred and eighty eight. Wow, sorry Meghan for commenting on the size of yours.

Book Read: Crazy Rich Asians
Author: Kevin Kwan
Number of Books Read: 11

The world Kevin Kwan describes in this book is insane. When he says “crazy rich,” he means it. We’re talking billionaires, hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of couture dresses, a wedding to end all weddings, private jets, exclusive clubs, and a million and one things I could never afford. Frankly, the lifestyle Kwan presented made me so intrigued by this book, I couldn’t put it down. #lifestylesoftherichandfamous

Rachel Chu doesn’t know much about her boyfriend Nick Young’s family. And by much, I mean she basically just knows he has a family in Singapore. That’s it. When he asks her to vacation in Singapore for the summer (they are both professors and can do that sort of thing - I may have picked the wrong career path) following his best friend’s wedding, she agrees. And nothing is ever the same.

Thrown into an elite society filled with constant events, Rachel deals with a whole lot of bitchiness (excuse my French). But she puts up with all of this with an impressive level of class. Her best friend from college is there to hold her up, support her and help her navigate. Nick continues to be a steadfast, loving boyfriend who has no idea what is going on because Rachel doesn’t want to admit it.

Then Nick’s mother takes things too far. Life for Rachel is forever changed.

This book not only focuses on Rachel and Nick, but also tells the stories of Nick’s family and friends. Including his best friend whose bachelor party sounds like a disaster, a cousin who cares way too much about his appearance and money, another who just loves her husband, but also loves couture, and numerous aunts and uncles, all with unique stories. The cast of characters is lengthy but fascinating.

Add a bachelorette party involving a dead fish, a hidden palace, a gold digger soap opera actress, women who put the term bitch in a whole new light, an investigation, and food that I want to eat right now, and you’ve got Crazy Rich Asians.

Kwan writes this book in a way that keeps you turning the pages and wondering what crazy stunt will happen next. Crazy Rich Asians is a book I would highly recommend. I’m looking forward to the movie.
