Another Year of Books

Welcome to my blog. Where reading a lot of books is the goal.

Emily Powell

3 minutes read

I found the third book in this series at the Beaver Library book sale. You can’t just start with book three and not read the first two, am I right? So back to the start I went, all leading to BOGO day here at Another Year of Books.

Book Read: The Devil Wears Prada
Author: Lauren Weisberger
Number of Books Read, 2019 Edition: 28

Andy Sachs lands the job “a million girls would die for,” when she becomes Miranda Priestly’s junior assistant at Runway. It’s not her dream job at the New Yorker, but they say a year with Miranda can lead to any job opportunity. Seeing a potential outcome, she pledges to make it a year.

But a year is a long time to deal with late night calls, scrambling to find a restaurant with no description, relationships outside of work and a fateful trip to Paris. Aided by senior assistant Emily, Andy is sucked into the Runway world. Will she survive the year?

Book Read: Revenge Wears Prada
Author: Lauren Weisberger
Number of Books Read, 2019 Edition: 29

Andy Sachs is back, a decade later, owning a high end wedding magazine with best friend Emily (yes, same Emily). Following her marriage to New York elite Max Harrison, Andy and Emily come face to face with Miranda herself, when Miranda wants to buy The Plunge. Miranda is not one to take no for an answer.

Friendships will be tested, as will marriages. Decisions will need to be made. Could Andy survive another tenure under Miranda? Or is The Plunge, and all of its traveling and writing, enough for Andy?

I am sure most of us have seen the movie version of The Devil Wears Prada more than once. I mean it has a stellar cast and is phenomenal. While it may be too late to read the book first, I’d recommend going back and reading it. The book, while is has a lot of similarities, has a good amount of differences. Andy’s friend Lily plays a much bigger role, and the ending is different, to name a few. Overall a worthy read that will have you grateful for your job.

Weisberger followed with a sequel in 2014, reuniting Emily and Andy as they tackle the magazine world together, outside of Runway.

Frankly, I struggled with this one until page 225-ish. I actually texted my sister at one point and complained about it. It was slow moving. Andy was no longer a force to be reckoned with, but instead was walked over by Emily and her husband. In the first book, she stood up for herself, yes in quiet subtle ways, but she still had a backbone. For the majority of this one, she was weak and didn’t seem to put up much of a fight.

Then a turning point (finally!). The book ended better than it started. Andy found her voice! But the time it took to get there, it may not be worth your time. Definitely read the first book; maybe read the second if you also want to read the third.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Emily is up to in the next read. To be determined if you have to read the second before hitting up the third.
