I am sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I keep an ever-growing list of books I want to read on my phone. It just makes it easier when I go to the library to pick a new one, or when I find one at a bookstore and don’t want to buy it just yet. Slowly, I’ve been dwindling it down, only to have it shoot back up, but a new tactic: request the books from the library so you can keep reading. Grab them while walking in the warmish weather.
Book Read: The Bucket List
Author: Georgia Clark
Number of Books Read, 2019 Edition: 11
Lacey Whitman has just found out, at the age of twenty five, that she has the BRCA1 gene mutation… otherwise known as the breast cancer gene. It means she needs to make a decision: a mastectomy or constant screening for the rest of her life. So before she makes that choice, she makes a “boob bucket list” with her friends one night, including all the things she’s worried she’ll lose the opportunity to do.
Lacey is torn - her job in trend forecasting keeps her on her toes in the fashion world, and her second job, outfit picking for an app owned by her good friend, keeps her days full. Plus, at 25, she doesn’t feel ready to lose her breasts yet.
A year of self exploration lays in store for Lacey. Her best friend is supportive, despite Lacey not wanting her help, her sister is worried for her daughter, and there may be a guy who doesn’t care what decision she makes because either way, he’ll be there.
Add in a salty coworker, sexual experimentation, a “too good to stand by you” jerk, a chance at a future, and you’ve got The Bucket List.
I will admit, this one started off slowly. When I first started, I was confident I’d like it. Then it slowed down, then about half way through, picked back up. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good read. But I should caution you.
At times, Lacey was whining. She refused to let her friends be there for her, but in the situation, sure, some of it was justified. But Lacey did get on my nerves. At one point, her best friend Steph admits how much of a bad friend Lacey is. Never good to hear that, is it.
Some characters were enjoyable, others were just a pain, but you’ll be rooting for Lacey to make a decision, not just about BRCA1, but about a big move. As a character, she does improve over time, but you’ve got to push through a few pages.
The Bucket List was a so-so read. It had some humor, some sass, some good pages and some bad. I’d recommend saving this one for your next beach trip when you’re sitting enjoying the sun.
