This book was a hand-me down, which always seems to work out well for me. This one went from Massachusetts to Brooklyn to Carnegie (and will probably go to Beaver next). It reminded me a book that you would read while sitting on a beach chair, feet in the water, SPF 50 on and getting some sun. (Or maybe SPF 75 - your call).

Portia’s life has taken a turn. Her ex-husband turned out to be a douche who betrayed her (with her best friend, I might add). She gave up her “knowing” to be the perfect wife… the knowing that told her who needed what food when, waking up knowing what to cook, a gift passed down from her grandmother. She didn’t plan to ever leave Texas, but life has driven her otherwise.
Now in New York City, living in an apartment left to her by her great aunt, Portia wants nothing more than to start a new life with her two sisters, Olivia and Cordelia. Then she meets her upstairs neighbors and life may never be the same.
Gabriel moved his two daughters to New York following the death of his wife, wanting to be closer to them. But neither daughter is adjusting well and being closer is harder than he thinks. Ariel stumbles upon Portia’s apartment one day and puts together a plan. So begins the romance novel relationship.
Will they make it? Will he think she’s crazy because she has the “knowing?” What will Ariel uncover? Will Miranda stop being a brat?
Add a makeshift restaurant in the basement, an asthma attack that reveals long kept secrets, a little groveling, teenage angst, and a “knowing” that keeps the food (and customers) coming, and you’ve got The Glass Kitchen.
This is a quick, light hearted, easy to read, beach read. It doesn’t have the depth of other books I’ve read this year, but if I had to pick a book to read while sitting my butt in the sand, this would be a good candidate. Maybe it’s a sign I should actually have read this one at the beach?
One last note: if anyone hears that there is a sequel or follow on to this book that tells us what happened to Cordelia and her hubby, please let me know.
