And we are back! Briefly, but we’re back. It feels good to be here.
Now, I know it’s been a while - an entire year to be exact. I’m wondering if I’ll even remember how to write a post. Then after I write it, will I remember the steps to publish it? Good news - it looks like I did.
It’s been a year of no posts and no book photos.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved to read.
That single sentence started it all in January 2018. With that post, Another Year of Books was born. And now, in January 2022, Another Year of Books has come to, what I consider, its next chapter.
One night in October, I was lying in bed, thinking about this blog of mine and decided it was time. Time to take a break, maybe temporarily, maybe permanently.

Since 2017, I’ve been writing down what books I read. Another Year of Books started in 2018, but the counting started the year before. Until 2021, 2017 remained the winner with 62 books read. This year, however, beats 2017 only slightly - in the end, 64 books were consumed. What a year.
The end of the year means it’s that time - to pick the best, the worst, and the ones I think you should hear about in a recap.

Whenever we travel, I try to find at least one bookstore to visit (and always end up buying a book there too). Earlier this year, I ordered two Kristen Ashley books from The Poisoned Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale, Arizona. When the package showed up, I was so impressed with how well packed it was! The books were completely protected. Not like when you buy a book from Amazon and they send it in a massive box that causes the book to move around the entire time. Since then, I’ve purchased another book from The Poisoned Pen. I expect I’ll be buying many more.

While we were on our honeymoon, we Ubered to the actual store to browse. The store was AWESOME. The layout was cool, the displays were fun and there were so many books. If you are ever in Scottsdale, make your way there. Anyway, while there, I bought this next read. Now, I’ve finally read it and am ready to write about it here, as the last review of 2021.

The first day of winter… here already. I can’t believe it. Maybe I could if the weather wasn’t so wonky. One day, I need my winter coat; the next, it’s 55 and sunny. I can’t keep up. That’s probably why (plus many other reasons) that I rather stay inside. If it’s too hot or cold in our house, I don’t have to point to climate change or blame Mother Nature. I only have to blame Matt.

It’s always great when you find a series you enjoy reading. It could be when you are reading it for the first time. Or you’re re-reading it multiple times again because it’s just that good, you keep going back to it. You could be waiting patiently for the next book. Then, you end up wanting more books in the series when you finally get to the end. Sometimes, the author appears to oblige you. That sums up this next read.

I didn’t do much shopping over Thanksgiving weekend. I bought a few clothing items, a couple of gifts, and that was pretty much it. But on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, after we watched Part 1 of Get Back on Disney+ (I’d highly recommend watching this - it’s a time commitment but worth it), I was in the mood to go to Barnes and Noble. Mostly, I wanted to browse because that’s always a good way to add to your TBR list; but I knew I’d buy at least one book. I ended up with two. Then, I came home and started reading this next book.

On a whim, I bought the first book below to read on my Kindle. I figured I’d read it and then wait for the second book from the library. After I finished the first in three days, I was so tempted to buy the second. I mentioned it to Matt and he said “you have a gift card, buy it.” He was right, so I bought it. Then, I read that one in three days as well.

Since these are the first two books in a series (the third, I expect will be released next year), I thought why not include them both in one post?

Let’s cut to the chase. I have no idea what to talk about in this intro blurb today. It’s just not coming to me, which seems to happen decently often. Sometimes, I just roll with it (like now) and other times, I think about it for a couple of days before inevitably talking about the weather, how it’s already almost a holiday (I’m talking to you, Thanksgiving), or about my TBR list. Well, now I’ve managed to talk about all three at once. Go me. Might as well just get on with it…

Earlier this year, I hosted a “Ladies Movie Day” at my house. We decided to watch the 2019 version of Little Women. Every one of us enjoyed it. I’ve watched it multiple times since and would highly recommend you watch it. I mean it has Meryl, Timothee Chalamet, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Saorise Ronan and more! All are great! Anyway, great movie. Add that to your to watch list. I am partially ashamed to admit that prior to watching the movie, I never read the actual book. I always thought I’d get around to it and never did. So when I was visiting Meghan in August, we went by a bookstore and I picked up a copy. I decided it was the perfect book for the 52nd read of 2021.

Sometimes, you need to purchase a random book on your TBR list, just because it sounds like a good idea. That’s what happened with this next read. I have so many books waiting to be read, either on my bookshelf or loaded on my Kindle, but I skipped all of those and bought this next one with my Amazon gift card. I have no other explanation except I had a gift card and felt like buying a book. The Layover was chosen.

If I find an author I like, I tend to commit. I’ll go back and read all of their previous books (time permitting) and then automatically save their next releases to my “books” list on Amazon. That way, I don’t forget to check out the new ones, even if the release date is a year from now. I did the same with this next author. Guillory’s books have been featured on AYOB in the past, and her next book, due to be released in May 2022, is sitting in my TBR list.

On September 24, Matt and I did a big thing - we got married! It was great. Then, a couple of days later, we set off on a honeymoon. We planned to sit at the pool, relax and just enjoy ourselves. Of course, I was armed with my Kindle with multiple books downloaded and ready to go.

I started this first book on our first flight and finished the last the day after we got home. Rather than share three separate posts, I decided to combine all three books into one “AYOB Goes On a Honeymoon” event.

I meant to post this a few days after the last post. Time got away from me. But after a three week hiatus, AYOB is back!

I read this one back in mid-September after purchasing it during a summertime “Amazon has buy-two-get-one-free, must buy three books” purchase. These sales will get me every time. It’s always a little tough to recap a plot after you’ve already read a handful of books in the meantime, but here we go!

It seems impossible to me that it’s already almost the end of September. But here we are. I feel like time is moving fast because all of the sudden, I have things to do. It’s not that I mind having things to do… I enjoy most of them. That said, I do like to sit inside, or outside pending the weather, and read a book, build a puzzle or just stay in. But here we are. Back to plans. I shall take it in stride.

Reading a series can go one way or another. It could be Harry Potter… they are all great and you have to read one before you read the next. It could also be Kristen Ashley’s Dream Team series or Jasmine Guillory’s Wedding Date series… they fit well as a series, but each could also be standalone novels. These ones could share characters and a common theme, yet can stand on their own two legs. This next read is the third in a series and falls into the second category.

Even with all of this crazy going on, it all worked in our favor and the day is almost here. What an adventure. I’m looking forward to it, but I won’t lie … going to sit at a pool for a week afterwards is going to be great. I already have my Kindle books queued up and ready to roll.

I’m usually behind on the TV shows everyone else is binging, with the exception of Bridgerton. For years, I have been saying I was going to watch Schitt’s Creek. I slowly watched the first and second season, then I couldn’t stop watching the third. I think I watched 7 episodes in 2 days. In the middle of reading The Lost Apothecary, I made it to the opening of Rose Apothecary on the show. I found it funny that in a matter of days, I was hit with a single word that I barely can pronounce.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned before that my sister and I are constantly trading books. When she was last in Pittsburgh, she brought with her Malibu Rising. I added it to the pile of books I had borrowed from her, knowing I’d end up reading it way before I read the two I’ve had on loan for the past year (or close to it). I was correct… I couldn’t wait to read this one, so I bumped it up on the list. Read on to see how that worked out for me.

I swear I add at least one book to my “To Be Read” list each week. Some weeks, it’s more depending on what is released. A while back, I added The Husband Hour. I figured I’d get around to it at some point. Then Meghan, my sister, asked if I had read any of Jamie Brenner’s books and said that she liked this one.
August, is that you? Ugh, it is. Gosh, summer is halfway over. It keeps getting hotter. I still need a tan… I should get on that (after I put on my sunscreen, of course). We’ve found ourselves out on our deck a lot more this summer. It’s been so nice to sit outside, put my feet up, and read a book (or several) until I get too hot (during the day) or too chilly (at night). Given that it’s August, it seems fitting that the next book is about summer.

Do you ever hear a song on the radio (or Spotify or Apple Music) and it just fits? Fits the mood you’re in, fits what’s going on in your life at the moment, fits the traffic. I’m sure you have; it happens to me all the time. I’m guilty of hearing a song, album or artist I like so much, I constantly listen to the same thing for a period of time. I listen while I work, while I commute, while I cook, while I clean. Recently, it happened with the In the Heights soundtrack, then before that, I listened to Pink because I watched her documentary, before that a song that came up in Dream Spinner. Now, you all know my music listening habits. Soon, the playlist will strictly be All Time Low… have to be ready for my first in person concert in almost 2 years.

Sometimes, this little intro blurb comes to me without any problems. Other times, like today, it is a struggle to think of anything to write. Should I talk about the weather? Summer flying by? Fun trips I have planned? Fun trips I hope you have planned? Or maybe I should just get to it. I think I’ll go with the last option.

In 2018, we bought tickets to see Jerry Seinfeld in Pittsburgh in early 2019. I knew of him (of course - who doesn’t?), had seen Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, but had never seen much of Seinfeld. We decided that we would start watching the show from the very beginning. At first, we had a lofty goal of finishing the sitcom before we went to the live show. That was a REALLY lofty goal; I mean there are 9 seasons and 180 episodes. It’s a time commitment. I think it took us over a year to finish all 9 seasons (we are slow when it comes to watching shows). By the end of the 9 seasons, I loved it.

Three Books, One Post

I debated writing about the first two of these three books. I wasn’t feeling it; not because I didn’t like the books, I just didn’t feel like writing about them. I also read them in pretty quick succession. As I was reading The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany, I had the same thought. I liked the book, but I didn’t want to dedicate an entire post to it.

Then, I had an idea - I’ll write a small blurb about all three and put them in one post. That way, I get to talk about them, you get to read about them, and I don’t feel like I’m skipping a good amount of books on here. So without further ado, three books… one post.

As I am sitting here trying to think of how to open this blog, I am listening to the In the Heights film soundtrack. My mom came over this weekend and we watched it on HBO Max. I know that Another Year of Books is a blog about what books you should (and shouldn’t) read, but I feel the need to plug the movie here. We LOVED it. I thought it was amazing. I plan on watching it many more times before it leaves HBO Max on July 11. I probably will listen to the soundtrack all week (which is exactly what I did both when I saw Hamilton in Pittsburgh and when we watched the movie). You should do the same.

I will never commit to having only one favorite movie. I know myself too well to do that. I’ll end up changing my favorite each and every time. One time, it’ll be The Sound of Music; another, Guys and Dolls; the next, First Wives Club. So instead, I have a top five, and on that top five, is the classic, 1989 Nora Ephron written, Rob Reiner direct, rom-com, When Harry Met Sally.

I absolutely love it. I could watch it daily. I’d probably most often cite it as my favorite movie. Recently, it was added to HBOMax… I watched it the same day. It’s quotable, it’s funny, it’s the best. Even if you disagree, you can’t deny that When Harry Met Sally has one pretty iconic scene. Plus, we all know “Baby Fish Mouth” is a GREAT pictionary answer. Actually, it’s probably the best.

It’s weird to be social again. For over a year, we have all gotten up, gone to work (mostly in our homes), came home (or logged off your computer), and stayed in watching old favorites, new TV shows, or finally catching up on that one everyone has been talking about. The main character in this next read has pretty much been living our quarantine lives. Her goal? To put herself out there. My goal? To go outside into the world again. So far, it’s been fun.

The number of books I have to read, whether they are on loan from my sister, on hold from the library, or my own books sitting on one of my bookshelves, keeps growing. So much so that I’ve decided to come up with a pattern to read them. This read is from my bookshelf. The next read is an e-book from the library. Following that I will be visiting one book on loan, before going back to the bookshelf. The only damper in my plans… The annual Library Book Sale is this weekend, and who knows what I could find. Wish me luck!

Anytime you are waiting for the next book in a series, it feels like the release date takes forever to arrive. This is exactly what happened to me with this next read. I read the second book in the series after it came out last December. I pre-ordered the third for my Kindle. When I saw that Barnes & Noble had the third book in stock the weekend before the offical release day, I cancelled my Kindle pre-order and headed to the store. Now, I’m back to waiting for the fourth book, which comes out in November… the countdown is on.

It seems like almost every time I go to Target, my book list grows by at least one, sometimes more. Occasionally, I actually buy the book I see, like when I bought One to Watch; other times, I just add the book to my Amazon list for future reference. I stumbled upon this next read on a Target run. It sounded fun. Then, Amazon sent a promo code to buy it for my Kindle. I usually can’t turn down the promo codes, so here we are with book #18.

There were two main things I wanted for Christmas this past year - a set of all 8 Harry Potter movies (thanks, Mom) and A Promised Land. I figured it would be a good read, would take some time to get through, and I’d learn something along the way. Plus, it would make a good addition to my bookshelf, considering we have Michelle Obama’s Becoming and Pete Souza’s Obama: An Intimate Portrait.

When Gma (aka Grandma) called and asked what was on my Christmas list, I told her about A Promised Land. As expected, it was wrapped and given to me on Christmas day. I put it on the bookshelf and didn’t think much of it, until I picked it up to read in early April. As I do with every book when I first pull it off the shelf, I went to put my bookmark on the first page, while reading through the table of contents and what not. To my surprise, Gma wrote me a note on a blank page. I loved it. No matter what the outcome of the book, I knew this one would be a keeper.

I commented to Matt recently that I have been saying I was going to watch a handful of shows for the past year, and despite having all this time at home, I haven’t. I don’t know if I should be proud for not watching too much TV or disappointed that I’m missing out on some good shows. But, I know that when I do have time to watch an episode or two, I’d rather be reading. That way, I can picture it all in my head, rather than on a screen.
As an early birthday present, Matt bought me the Amazon Kindle Oasis. For the past year, I have been borrowing ebooks from the library, or buying Kindle books and reading them on my phone or iPad. It was a great alternative since I couldn’t visit the library and check out a book. I never minded it, but it did hurt my eyes. Plus, as Matt will tell you, I would often be sitting on the coach with a charger plugged into my iPad while reading. His solution: a Kindle. I love it.

I had plans to read a paperback from my shelf, but made a detour to use my new Kindle. I had to give it a try with a book that has been sitting in my account for some time.

I have never watched The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, or any of their many spin offs. I know people love to watch them; I have no desire. I’m sure at some point, in the many years the shows have been on air, that I have seen part of or all of one episode. But I don’t recall and I will not admit it.

Because of this, it seems odd that I would want to read the next book. It is, essentially, a book about a show like The Bachelorette, but when I read the synopsis, I added it to my list. It sounded like a good read. Then one day, when I found myself at Target, I bought a copy. I still won’t be tuning into the shows anytime soon, but clearly, I will read books along the same lines.

It’s been a minute or two since there was a new post on Another Year of Books. After reading Group, I quickly read through three other books (but didn’t post about them). By the end of February, I had already finished 10 books this year, so I decided to take a break. I couldn’t get myself to pick up one of the many books I have to read from my bookshelves; instead, I spent my time skimming books I have read before, which is what I do everytime I can’t get myself to focus on one book.

On March 5, I picked up this next book. It was a Barnes & Noble monthly pick in January, and I found it when we stopped to browse one day.

Holiday reads should never be limited to the holiday season, which is why in January, I picked up In a Holidaze, which was on loan to me from my sister. Maybe it was in an effort to hit up the bookshelf again, or it was because I was feeling nostalgic after taking down our Christmas tree in mid-January. Either way, it seemed like a wise decision (it did end up being a good decision).

I love a good bookshelf. Whether it’s in someone’s home or a store or a library, bookshelves are cool. I was lucky that our house came with one. It’s been featured in a few pictures on AYOB already. Because I like to show off other items besides books on the shelf, I run out of room often. We ended up buying a small bookshelf for our guest bedroom. It added something to that part of the wall and gave me an extra spot to store books. Just what I need - more space!

I decided to focus on reading some of my unread, bookshelf books this year. This next read came from the Annual Library Book Sale I attend each year.

The first AYOB post of 2021 is finally here! I spent some time at the very end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix before digging into the first official book of 2021. I decided, after conferring with Matt, that to be counted towards the 2021 read count, the book must be completely finished during 2021. Harry Potter spanned two years, so it won’t count towards either read count; however, this next read will.

2020 - what a year, am I right? It’s been a tough one, especially this holiday season. Thankfully, it’s coming to a close and the future is looking like it will be more normal. But then again, isn’t less normal sometimes more fun? Maybe, maybe not; it probably depends on what that less normal looks like.
The end of the year means it’s time to look back on the books I’ve read, pick a few winners, pick a few losers, and round out the year with a recap, just as I have done in 2018 and 2019.

Well, this is it. The last book review of 2020. After finishing The Vanishing Half, I wanted to read one more book before I picked up Harry Potter yet again.

Since the pandemic began, I’ve been reading a good amount of books using the Kindle app on my iPad. It’s the best way to borrow books from the library when you can’t physically go to the library. I’ve also been keeping my eye on my books list to see if any of the Kindle versions go on sale. That happened with Beach Read. It’s been on my list for a while, and one day, it was $1.99 for the Kindle version. I bought it, left it alone for months, figuring I would get to it when I got to it, and then, the other day, it was time.

Over the past few years, I have tried to keep up with the top books of the year. It usually worked out. For 2020 though, I decided to read what I wanted, when I wanted, with no restrictions. That led to rereading a few books I’ve read in the past, discovering a new author and reading most of her books, and managing to read at least one of the best books of 2020. Lucky for me, my sister subscribes to Book of the Month and leant me this next read.

It’s hard to believe it’s already December and the holidays are quickly approaching. Some days, it feels like it was just March; other days, it feels like March was actually three years ago. At least one thing is consistent no matter what way you look at it - there is always another book to read.

We all know 2020 is a weird year. Well, weird is one way to put it. I’m sure it will only continue that way in the next six weeks as we round out the year. It only seems fitting that my 52nd read of the year is also a bit weird.

The Twilight Saga was the “it thing” when I was in high school. I read all four books and saw the first two movies. The second movie was so bad, I never saw the three follow-ons. I remember that the first movie had an amazing soundtrack, and my favorite line of “Since I’m going to hell” in a school parking lot scene (the rest of the movie was meh, looking back). Still, I enjoyed the original series when I read them, so I figured I’d read Midnight Sun when my future sister-in-law loaned it to me.

I’ve spent the last few weeks rereading the first two books of the Paradise series by Elin Hilderbrand before picking up the third one. For the past two years, she has put out one book a year and I’ve read them (see this and this). I usually just pick up the latest book and start reading, but this time I thought to myself: “Pause. Reread the first two books.” So I did before picking up the third and final book, which arrived from Amazon in early October.

At the beginning of every chapter in this next read, Elin Hilderbrand starts with a paragraph describing what people were talking about each year. Let’s do the same.

What are we talking about in the beginning of October 2020?

The debate. COVID-19. How did the weather go from 80 to 65 so quickly? When it is acceptable to decorate for Halloween? The Great British Baking Show (maybe that’s just me). Is Hallmark again starting their Christmas movies too soon? (The answer is yes.) How many times can you watch Hocus Pocus in the next month? (The limit does not exist.) Say Her Name. Vote. Vote. Vote. Vote (in any way you can).

This post marks the first time Another Year of Books has covered a local author. This book was a gift from my aunt, who bought it at a book festival in Beaver. The author is from Beaver, the story takes place in Beaver, and having been born and raised there, I love Beaver. I also love Pride and Prejudice, particularly the 2005 film (I mean the hand stretch - come on!). Immediately, this book was off to a good start.

Before we left for a weeklong vacation, Amazon luckily had a “buy two, get one” sale on books. It was great timing for me, since I always like to take a few new reads with me. I love to read anytime - on my couch, on the deck, on the bus to and from work (or I did when I actually went into the office), but there is nothing like reading a book on vacation. It’s the best, especially when the book is a beach/summer read; it’s definitely convinent when the title of the book has the word “summer” in it.

I try to do my best to keep up with authors that I like; meaning, I try to pay attention to when a new book is coming out. A week after this one came out, it was already at my house, waiting to be read on vacation. Why? If I enjoyed Kevin Kwan’s newest book half as much as I enjoyed the Crazy Rich Asians series, it would be a great read.

“Where do you see yourself?” is my least favorite question. I never know how to answer because it seems like a trick question. It could lead to great things, but it could lead to weird ones. Plus, life changes so constantly, how can you predict what life will be like in five years?

That is why when asked, I don’t give an answer, or I give the broadest answer possible (i.e.: “Well, I would like to have a job.”). It’s better that way.

I do my best to remember when a sequel I want to read is coming out. Some authors make it easy, like Elin Hilderbrand. For the past three years, I could count on her to put out a new book in her Winter in Paradise series in the fall. When I stumble upon a sequel I forgot about, it’s always a nice thrill. This next book is a sequel that I completely forgot about until I was browsing Amazon one day and found it.

It’s been a while since my last post. Don’t think I haven’t been reading - I’ve knocked out a few more books since the last post; I just decided not to write about them. While I’ve been gone, here is what I’ve read and a quick “should you read this?" answer.

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

What would happen if the First Son of the USA and the Prince of England hooked up? I finished this one in two days if that tells you if I liked it or not. Warning, it is a little risque.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling

Do you even have to ask if you should read this one?

The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory

I went back and read the third book of this series. It was as I predicted; skip this one.

I’m guessing you probably have some time on your hands right now. Each time a new season comes out, we watch the whole season within two weeks (we try to pace ourselves so we can enjoy it more).

I am trying to clean out my bookshelf by reading the books I haven’t yet read. Mostly, I’m doing this so I can give some back to the library before I buy more later this year. It’s important to have priorities, right? This next read is one of those books - I purchased it at the library’s book sale last summer. I needed to decide if it would stay or go back to the library.

Since I started writing/editing this post, I have been singing Goyte’s hit… “Now you’re just somebody that I used to know… SOMEBODY (I used to know).” I’m not sure if that’s exactly how the lyrics go, but in my head, it makes perfect sense. This would be why I write blogs and not song lyrics. Stick to what you think you are good at, right?

The Sound of Music is one of my all time favorite movies, hands down. I always have loved it. My family will tell you they can’t count how many times they had to rewind the two VHS’s so I could watch it again. Even now, I have watched it on Disney+ at least five times (they even have the intermission!). I can’t help it. I want to climb every mountain! So, of course I wanted to read Julie Andrews’ latest memoir.

It’s Another Year of Books! I seem to have a trend when it comes to my first book of the year (or within the first 3). I always seem to start with an autobiography or memoir. In 2018, Anna Faris’s Unqualified was number 3; in 2019, Michelle Obama’s Becoming was the first read.
2020 is no different.

Another year has already come and gone. I can’t believe it. I still can’t believe that I read all 52 books in 2019. I was filled with doubt and, mostly, annoyance at myself. But then, after I finished, all I felt was pride, and a little tired. This one is always the hardest… the recap. Which books were the best? Which were the worst? Which books are waiting for Hallmark to pick them up?

On December 31, 2019, at 12:04 PM, I sent my sister this text:

It was the last day of the year. Since December 25, I had read three books (and wrote 0 posts). On Christmas Eve, when asked if I was going to read all 52, I said no. I didn’t anticipate reading three books in 6 days. It helped that Matt has been sick and we didn’t leave the house much, and that the three books kept my attention.

I was in the mood for a Christmas themed book. Luckily, I had one on my shelf. I mean, truthfully, I only have one. This was my only option.
This next read came as a recommendation from a friend. Yes, I know it’s a movie too, so eventually I would have gotten to it. But a recommendation usually bumps up the book on the “to read” list. Really, if this book wasn’t as good as I expected, who knows what would have happened - awkwardness, bitterness, loss of a friend. Just kidding of course. I will never hold a book recommendation grudge… unless it is really, really bad.

I struggle with non-fiction. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this each time I talk about non-fiction, but it’s true. This book took me awhile to read. Not because it was a bad book, but because I feel like I have to really pay attention to what I’m reading.

I learned how to make macarons on Saturday. It was a magical experience. The class was three hours long and well worth every minute. We have already ate half of one box. By the end of the afternoon following, I almost fell asleep reading a book. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday, right?

It’s official. Twenty six books down, twenty six books to go. But only twenty three weeks left in the year (if I counted correctly). I better get moving on the next twenty six. The next option may be to read when my boyfriend drives me too work, but he drives pretty quickly. I should probably stick to reading when I get home. Book Read: The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters

The hardest part of writing Another Year of Books is this intro paragraph. Sometimes, I have a hundred things to say. Other days, like today, I can’t think of even one. I’ve complained about the weather plenty of times, I’ve mentioned my love of walking to the library at lunch, and besides some family visits and yard work, my week has been pretty ordinary. So, I’ll just get right to the point:

The week after a holiday, aka a day off, seems to either fly by or drag along. I can’t decide what this week is doing. One day fast, the next day slow. Maybe it’s the heat (I know, I’m still complaining about the heat), or it’s that it just feels like we should all be on a beach. If you are one of the lucky few, don’t forget your hat, sunscreen and a good book.

It is hot outside. Unbearably hot, which means I usually get slightly sun burnt on any walks/runs, and come back to work sweating from my lunchtime walk. It’s super fun, let me tell you. But when it’s this hot, there’s no better time to stay cool in the AC with a good book and an ice cold drink.

I have been putting off writing this post because I’ve been feeling discouraged when it came to AYOB. While I’m slowly marching towards 52 books, I feel behind. Then I had myself convinced that despite knowing people read this, no one was actually reading. I mean, even my best friend openly admits she doesn’t read it.
Then, I went to visit my aunt and grandparents this past weekend. My aunt was telling her friends about my blog and then commented that other friends read every post and take the recommendations.

While away, we took in historical sights, watched the Eiffel Tower’s 130th Anniversary light show, walked 124 total miles, and ate a lot of pastries. I mean a lot of pastries. Along the way, we found a bookshop in each city, each with its own uniqueness and fame (I might have picked up a book or two).

The only medical show I have watched (and thoroughly enjoyed) was House. It wasn’t too gruesome, and it had a way of looking deeper. The synopsis of this book reminded me of it. How House would weave into the patient’s mind or body to show you something. This book sounded like it would do the same.

I am sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I keep an ever-growing list of books I want to read on my phone. It just makes it easier when I go to the library to pick a new one, or when I find one at a bookstore and don’t want to buy it just yet. Slowly, I’ve been dwindling it down, only to have it shoot back up, but a new tactic: request the books from the library so you can keep reading.

I’m 26 years old, and every year, I’m still asked what’s on my Christmas list. The answer is usually pretty standard: money, something I’ve been putting off buying, and books. Becoming was a Christmas gift (thanks, Mom), as was this next read (thanks, Aunt Barb), and the one after this (again, thanks Aunt Barb). My philosophy: there is plenty of room on my bookshelf, so no amount of books is too many.

It’s becoming more and more difficult to pick which book I read. Since I’m on the last leg of 52 for the year, I feel as if I should make sure they are good ones (PS - this one worked out in my favor). But my time for reading 52 this year is quickly dwindling. I feel like I woke up one morning and it was Halloween, and the next thing I knew I was figuring out what I’m doing on Turkey Day.

But, when I went to the library (not at lunch this time – big change for me!) when I was almost done with my last read, I picked up not 1, but 2 books, and they were meant to be read and talked about together.
Since I read and loved Dave Egger’s The Circle a couple of years back, I have been trying to give him another chance. I finished The Circle in one weekend on a girls’ trip to the beach, so I tried a few of his other books… no success.
Back to fiction we go with another the Skimm recommendation. According to this novel, the Navajo do not have words for “I love you.” They believe that no one can possess another. Instead, they say “I’m glad about you” (I did consult the Google on this and can’t find any evidence to the contrary). Either way, a fitting title for this read. Book Read: I’m Glad About You

The 7th book of 2018, I picked up because the cover was colorful. I walked into the library, looked at the front tables, and it caught my eye. Unless it’s an author I have heard of, or someone recommended it to me, I usually struggle with the essay/memoir type of book (example: didn’t think twice about Anna Faris’s). Frankly, I tend to avoid them.
But – if you read the author information on the back sleeve, the author has been called the “voice of her generation” by O: The Oprah Magazine; when has Oprah ever been wrong?

I tend to find books as I’m wandering the library at lunch. Sometimes, if I can’t find a book on my “to read” list, I pick one based on the cover, the author, or if I saw other people looking at it. Usually, it works out pretty well. This one… I’m still not convinced that picking a book because Powell was in the author’s name was a good idea. You win some, you lose some.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved to read. I remember a picture where I fell asleep with a Samantha American Girl doll book draped over my face. Reading was a hobby. Year after year, one book came after another.
Then college began, and reading fell on the priority list. Honestly, I don’t remember reading anything but textbooks and Facebook feeds during the school year (summers - replace textbooks with books and keep the Facebook feeds).
